Welcome to On This Day In Blues History, a series looking back at some key moments over the years for the St. Louis franchise.
The St. Louis Blues' playoff run was cut short in Game 7 this year, but it was picking up steam en route to the Stanley Cup back on this day in 2019.
On May 17, 2019, the Blues hosted the San Jose Sharks in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final.
After a 6-3 defeat in Game 1, the Blues battled back with a 4-2 win in Game 2 to split the first two games on the road. However, Game 3 ended in controversial fashion when Erik Karlsson scored off a missed hand pass from Timo Meier.
The Blues could've been deflated after the loss. They held a 4-3 lead throughout most of the third period until Logan Couture tied it up with less than two minutes remaining. Then the Sharks took a 2-1 series lead on a play that the NHL admitted should've been blown dead.
But head coach Craig Berube didn't let the Blues dwell on it. They had another home game less than 48 hours to focus on, and they completed the mission with a 2-1 win in Game 4 to even up the series once again.
Ivan Barbashev got the Blues off on the right foot with his first goal of the playoffs just 35 seconds into the game. St. Louis never looked back with Tyler Bozak adding a power-play goal later in the opening frame.
The Sharks got on the board with a power-play goal of their own in the early stages of the third period, but that would be the only puck to beat Binnington on that night. The then-26-year-old Binnington made 29 saves on 30 shots to backstop the Blues to a crucial win in Game 4.
