If you backtrack to when the St. Louis Blues regular season kicked off in mid-October, I never would have anticipated pitching the idea that this ‘retooling’ team could return to relevance this season.
In fact, if there’s one team I’ve been consistently inconsistent on, it’s the Blues. First, they looked hot, then they looked hopeless. Not long after, the Blues fired head coach Drew Bannister and put Jim Montgomery behind the bench, arguably general manager Doug Armstrong’s best move of the season.
But, if he wants to augment that, there’s one player out there who few of us may have expected to be traded who could be heading elsewhere. That player is Brock Boeser, who, in his age-27 season, looks like he’s about to once again notch a 70-plus-point campaign. Or, that would have been the case had he not sustained an injury early in the year.
One reason I’d be looking forward to seeing the Blues acquire Boeser is because of the fact he can implement a much-needed spark when they have the puck. It’s not that St. Louis has been horrific in trying to find twine, but they’re light years from where they need to be offensively if they plan on making a run to the playoffs as a ‘dark horse.’
Brock Boeser could fit into the St. Louis Blues lineup as a top-six forward
Earlier in the year, I would have talked about why the Blues should be sellers come midseason and through the 2025 trade deadline. But, considering the current circumstances, that’s no longer the case as this team is at arm's length of stealing a top-four spot in the Central.
While the contending Canucks may not trade away anyone, to have a player like Boeser at least swirling around the rumor mill may indicate they’re looking to ‘sell’ before making a huge ‘buy.’ No, he won’t come cheaply, but the Blues could use someone who has 11 goals and a 21.6 shooting percentage this season to place onto their top six.
Boeser can also bring more physical play to the Blues, so he would potentially bring a decent two-way game to Gateway City. We’ll see if the Canucks indeed look to trade Boeser, and if those rumors heat up, let’s hope Doug Armstrong has another bold move in him.
