Father Time is undefeated and, this season, it looked like the aging curve finally came for Oskar Sundqvist. The 32-year old forward finished the year with five goals, 12 assists, and 17 total points in 52 games played while averaging 12:58 per game, but it's not the scoring that was an issue: it was the rest of his play. The St. Louis Blues would be wise to let him walk during the offseason.
Expectations for 2025-26
Sundqvist has long been a reliable, if unflashy, bottom-six forward. His expectations for this season were no different than what they have been for the bulk of his career. The 17 points he put up more or less correlates with the rest of his career but, under the hood, he was a disaster.
Grade: D
Per Natural Stat Trick, Sundqvist was the worst Blues regular at driving play, posting a horrific 38.19 expected Goals For percentage (xGF%). The next worst Blues regular was Alexey Toropchenko, with 41.39 xGF%. Any time Sundqvist was on the ice, the Blues were getting obliterated; that's unacceptable, even for a depth player like Sundqvist.
Where does he go from here?
That remains to be seen. Sundqvist will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and able to sign with any team that would offer him a contract. After this awful season, though, that may be unlikely. At the very least, with the prospects the Blues have coming in their pipeline and the considerable depth they already have under contract, this should probably be the end of Sundqvist's time wearing the Blue Note.
