Hat tricks are always fun to see, given their relative rarity. But sometimes, they’re not so rare, and one extraordinary player for the St. Louis Blues recorded four hat tricks in a single season back in 1991-92.
If you’re new to the Blues, you may not know who that player is, but if you’ve been around the team for an extended time, chances are, you know who I’m talking about. Keep reading to discover which Blues player hit the eight hat tricks in a season mark and which others accomplished the feat four times in a single campaign.
Which St. Louis Blues players have at least three hat tricks?
Before we dive into the single-season hat trick leaders, let’s check out some honorable mentions from years past. Keep in mind that just because we will mention a few names here, it doesn’t mean that you won’t see repeats below.
Brett Hull is one name to look out for, as he recorded three hat tricks in the 1993-94 season. Other Blues players who scored a trio of goals in a trio of games include Garry Unger (1973-74), Pierre Plante (1974-75), Bernie Federko (1976-77), Jorgen Pettersson (1980-81), and Federko also completed the feat in 1983-84.
Four
Brendan Shanahan (1993-94) and Brett Hull (1990-91)
One of the most memorable seasons for Brendan Shanahan came in 1993-94. Not only was he one of just a handful of Blues players to hit the 102-point mark in a single season, but Shanahan also recorded four hat tricks. Those trio of goals in four games definitely helped him hit 52 that season, and with seven short-handed goals, it’s safe to say Shanahan thrived in scoring that year regardless of the situation.
And, of course, Brett Hull also hit four hat tricks a few years earlier in the 1990-91 season. If you’ve been reading some of our history-based articles lately and you’re new to this storied Blues franchise, Hull is a player you’ve heard about repeatedly. It was an unforgettable year for one of the franchise’s best, as he took home the Hart and Pearson Awards as those four hat tricks helped him find the net 86 times.
Five
Brett Hull (1989-90)
If you thought four hat tricks were impressive, Hull bested that number a year earlier when he scored three goals in a single game five times. He didn’t win the Hart that season, but a top-three finish still solidified him as one of the league’s best players following what was a 72-goal, 113-point outing.
Eight
Brett Hull (1991-92)
While Hull won some awards in 1990-91 following a year when he scored four hat tricks, his best tenure came in 1991-92 when he found the back of the net three times in a single game eight times. That means he scored an eye-popping 24 goals (at least) across just eight games, and he ended the year with 70 total and another third-place finish for the Hart.
Given his efforts in Gateway City, it’s a shame that Hull never managed to hoist what was then the elusive Stanley Cup - the Blues won their first and only Cup as of 2024 in 2019 - but Hull had the privilege of scoring the series-clinching goal in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final for the Dallas Stars. As controversial of a goal that it was, and one that is and always will be talked about for decades to come.
