St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the team has signed forward Mathias Laferriere to a one-year, two-way contract extension ($775,000 NHL / $100,000 AHL),” reported the St. Louis Blues Press Release.

Mathias Laferriere, who has the chance to continue his hockey career, has his sights set on eventually earning a place on an NHL roster.

Laferriere, a sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft, has played extensively in various leagues, such as the QMJHL, ECHL, and, most recently, the AHL.

Even though he turns 24 during this offseason, there is still a genuine opportunity for him to further develop, and the St. Louis Blues would be more than happy to see that happen.

Mathias Laferriere is fighting for a roster spot

As a Montreal native, hockey is part of Laferriere’s DNA.

In the past two years, Laferriere has made his presence known by playing for the St. Louis Blues AHL affiliate, Springfield Thunderbirds.

2022-23: 50 games, 9 goals, 17 assists, 26 points.
2023-24: 68 games, 7 goals, 18 assists, 25 points.

While not a first-round pick expected to be an all-star caliber player, Laferriere is a large skater standing at 6’2” and brings size to any roster he suits up for.

Laferriere will probably stay in Springfield and continue his career, benefiting from the guidance of their new coach, Steve Konowalchuk.

Laferriere, being at a young age, still has the opportunity to pursue his NHL aspirations and improve his skills, particularly in the area of goal-scoring.

Being able to maintain a position in the AHL has already given him an edge, and this has resulted in the Blues front office having a great deal of respect for him, as they see qualities in him that they appreciate and seek to further develop.
