It’s the offseason, the draft has passed, and the free agent market has quieted down. But the anticipation for the 2024-25 season is palpable.

What do hockey pundits do? They plan and make bold predictions for 2024-25, drawing on their deep understanding of the game and its players.

FanDuel did just that, naming the top four players they believe will have the best chance of winning the Rocket Trophy Award.

For those who are new to hockey, this esteemed award is given to the league's leading goal scorer, adding an extra layer of thrill to the competition.

The last five winners were:

2023-24: Auston Matthews–69 goals
2022-23: Connor McDavid–64 goals
2021-22: Auston Matthews–60 goals
2020-21: Auston Matthews–41 goals
2019-20: Alex Ovechkin & David Pastrnak–48 goals

Unsurprisingly, Auston Matthews is the frontrunner for winning the award in the 2024-25 season.

Auston Matthews: -115
David Pastrnak: +550
Leon Draisaitl: +750
Kirill Kaprizov: +750

On this one, we probably have to agree with FanDuel, especially with Matthews being the favorite to win the award. As long as he is healthy, Matthews is the most dominant scorer in the league.

His style of play has been reminiscent of Alex Ovechkin, who previously won the award 7 times in 9 years.

Is it possible for Connor McDavid to surpass his performance in 2022-23 and win another trophy? It’s possible, but according to FanDuel, his teammate Leon Draisaitl has a better chance of earning that achievement.

We should keep our eyes on David Pastrnak, as he can score. He netted 47 goals in 2023-24.

The most intriguing name is Kirill Kaprizov, who scored 46 goals last season.

Some notable names are missing, such as Sam Reinhart (57 goals in 2023-24) and Nathan MacKinnon (51 goals in 2023-24).

Regardless, Matthews  seems poised to excel once more in 2024-25. Is the trophy his to lose? FanDuel sure thinks so.
