Robert Thomas set to return to Blues lineup

The St. Louis Blues are, at last, getting their top center back.

The St. Louis Blues are, arguably, at their lowest right now: they're on a seven game losing streak with a 3-7-2 record, last in the Central Division, and tied with the abysmal Calgary Flames with eight (8!) standings points. The goaltending is bad, and there aren't many roster levers head coach Jim Montgomery can pull to improve things.

Thankfully, though, the Blues are getting back one of their most pivotal players. Robert Thomas, after missing a handful of games, returns to the lineup tonight against the Edmonton Oilers.

Thomas is, without a doubt, the Blues' best center (though Pius Suter filled in admirably in his absence). He didn't start the season that well with only a single goal, five assists, and six points through eight games, but Thomas is too talented to be that underwhelming for an entire season. The Blues are in desperate need of some game changing talent, and hopefully their top centerman can provide a jolt to a roster that's floundering.

Adding Thomas back is no small thing. Not only does it bring some juice back to a milquetoast power play, it slots everybody else on the roster into a better position: Suter as second-line center, Calder-eligible Dalibor Dvorsky as third-line center, and Nick Bjugstad holding down fourth-line center duties. That should give the Blues a better handle on matchups going forward--especially against an Oilers team boasting two of the best players in the sport in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

This far into the season and in an ultra-competitive Central Division, the Blues can't afford to keep losing like this. A healthy Robert Thomas gives them a chance to dig themselves out of an early hole.
