Seravalli had the perfect description for the St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues remain below .500 on the season with a record of 9-11-7. With the injury bug hitting them hard with yet another regular in forward Nathan Walker hitting the injured reserve, things are starting to look dire for this team.

Couple that with the turbulent start from goaltender Jordan Binnington, and the aftermath with head coach Jim Montgomery, which has now since smoothed over, the current state of the Blues is not great. Frank Seravalli, the notorious hockey insider, spoke on the Blues in his most recent segment of Frankly Hockey.

He described this team perfectly, and I think the fans can get behind what he had to say.

"I think what a lot of people miscalculated about the Blues heading into this year, despite them being a playoff team that took the Jets to the distance last year, I think this is a mostly average team. And, I think they are poorly constructed at that. I think they are caught in the middle between trying to be a playoff team that is chasing it, and trying to be a team that’s trying to get younger at the same exact period in time. You are likely one or the other in the NHL, you’re not half pregnant," said Seravalli.

This is a strong statement, that is 100 percent right. The Blues are caught up in a bad spot, and their future identity is very unclear. With the passing of the torch from General Manager Doug Armstrong to Alexander Steen happening at the end of this campaign, there is no clear indication as to what direction this team will be in at that point.

Youth seems to be at the forefront of this franchise, but their core is locked up for the long haul and those players are getting older. Brayden Schenn, Pavel Buchnevich, Colton Parayko and Justin Faulk are all over $6.5 million or more over the next two to five seasons, and all are over the age of 30. But, then you have the rising stars of Jimmy Snuggerud, Dalibor Dvorsky, Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg, Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou and Logan Mailloux as the next generation of the Blues legacy. Let us also not forget about Justin Carbonneau as well joining this group very soon.

This is an average team that had a really good ending to their season last season. They didn't fool us all, as they are trying their absolute best to win hockey games. Despite everything, you cannot deny the will and determination to win. It just has not gone their way this season, injuries are ramping up, and tempers are flaring. Barring another unbelievable win streak, this season will end with expectations incomplete. The pieces are there, but not yet developed.
