The St. Louis Blues troubles are beginning to mount in the beginning of the 2026-27 season. After a better start than recent years, this team has really cooled off this week.
They cannot buy a win against a Central Division opponent. The Blues most recent loss to the Nashville Predators, 5-2, made it 1-4-0 against their own division.
Let’s go around the horn here and reveal what has happened this week for the Blues.
Central Division woes
Since defeating the Minnesota Wild on opening night, the Blues have gotten ice-cold against other Central Division opponents. This is trickling over from last season, and does not bode well for the rest of this one.
If the Blues want to make any kind of headway in this Division, they are going to have to figure out how to beat the teams that they play the most. Especially the other teams at the bottom of the Division, like Chicago and Nashville.
McDouble takeover
Mason McTavish and Connor McMichael make up the “McDouble”, a growing name developed by our own Co-Expert Michael Meyer. These two have been lightning rods for this offense, and there is no stopping them. The speed, grit and offensive overhaul that they bring is irreplaceable.
Particularly for McMichael, who is steadily gaining an edge over Jordan Kyrou of Washington, and giving the Blues a win on this trade.
Thomas finally finding his edge?
Robert Thomas has consistently started off seasons at a slower pace, and this 2026-27 campaign is no different. But, a nice showing against both Ottawa and Minnesota painted a bit of a different picture, enticing a kickstart to this season. Unfortunately, he took a bit of a step back against Nashville, but it was a lot better than the initial three games of this season.
Montgomery on the hot seat
With a 3-4-1 record and coming off of a very winnable game against Nashville, head coach Jim Montgomery is once again on the hot seat. He still has a very long leash to go before General Manager Alexander Steen has to do anything rash, but the idea has to be in his mind. Another poor showing against Winnipeg on October 20, the Blues' next game, and that leash gets a lot shorter.
Other NHL Ramblings
The Philadelphia Flyers finally got in the win column with a 3-1 win over Ottawa. Connor McDavid of Edmonton is absolutely on fire through the first eight games of the season, with six goals and 17 assists for 23 points.
