The St. Louis Blues could not have drawn up a more convincing start to their 2026-27 regular season. Traveling to a hostile arena to face off against their Central Division rival, the Dallas Stars, goaltender Joel Hofer delivered a 25-save shutout to set the tone for what will hopefully be good things to come for he and his club this season.

While his statline now shows a 'one' in the Shutout column, and that number is impressive by itself, it is the how behind Hofer's shutout that helps to understand what he did against the Stars.

Facing an Expected Goals Against (xGA) of 3.14, Hofer single-handedly negated over three goals' worth of high-grade scoring opportunities, sending a very clear message to his team and across the league that he and the Blues are ready to start the season on the right foot.

Breaking down the high-danger chances

What made Hofer's opening night so remarkable wasn't just the number of saves, but how dangerous those shots against actually were. Dallas repeatedly pressed inside the St. Louis defensive zone from an average of just under 37 feet. Through all of that heavy pressure, the young netminder stayed calm, focused, and in complete control between the pipes.

The 26-year-old handled every level of danger Dallas threw at him. He stopped all seven high-grade scoring chances right in front of the net, handled four mid-range attempts, and swept aside 12 routing shots. When the Stars managed to get behind the Blues defense or scrambled for rebounds, Hofer turned away two rush shots and swallowed three rebound attempts.

For fans who have followed Hofer's career, his opening night performance seems like he is taking the next step after establishing himself as the number one goaltender for the Blues in the 2025-26 season. Last season, he managed a 24-13-5 record with a .909 save percentage and six shutouts.

Hofer has proven he has both the physical stamina and mental toughness to handle a heavier workload. Now, as the official number one goaltender, Hofer is showing that last season was not a fluke, but the foundation for what could be an elite career.

What Blues fans can expect moving forward

Moving forward throughout the 2026-27 season, Blues fans have every reason to believe Hofer can continue to build on this performance. Having a reliable starting goalie who can cover for defensive breakdowns and steal wins against top-tier division rivals could be the difference between a playoff berth and not.

As Hofer continues to command the crease with confidence and poise, St. Louis now has the reliable goaltender needed to make a serious push once more. If his performance in Dallas was any indication, the Joel Hofer era in St. Louis is officially off to a flying start.
