The St. Louis Blues continue to tidy up their roster with more and more forwards. This time, it will be Oskar Sundqvist coming back on a one-year, two-way deal worth $850,000 AAV. Welcome back, Sunny.
With the abundance of eager prospects and the plethora of new faces entering the four forward lines next season, Sundqvist was a cheap and reliable depth option that may also be used in Springfield at the AHL-level, as it is a two-way deal.
Sundqvist, who is extending his second dance with the Blues, is entering his ninth season with the Blues out of a possible 12. The direction that this team is heading gives the youth more of an opportunity, but retaining a veteran like No. 70 is a great option to have if things go south.
In 52 games last season, he scored five goals and added 12 assists for 17 points. Primarily known for the center position, with the acquisitions of Jack Finley last season and then this offseason's stockpile of Mason McTavish and Connor McMichael, that might change.
Even on the wing, Sundqvist can adapt to his new role and certainly make an impact. The two-way aspect of this deal done by new General Manager Alexander Steen gives two positives here. One being flexibility with the lineup for the younger players coming in, and second, a veteran presence in Springfield that can lean on some of the up-and-coming forwards.
All-in-all, there is nothing more than can be said other than the Blues made the right call here by bringing back Sundqvist.
