One of the early-season concerns for the Blues has been their lack of scoring. Through the first 12 games of the season, they have scored 35 goals, which is the 11th fewest in the NHL. That averages out to just under three goals a game, which is not going to bring you much success if you allow just over three goals a game. Sure, it's not a big gap, but it still results in a negative goal differential. This will make the Blues lose games and have a losing season if things do not change.
But what should give hope to fans is the fact that the Blues are generating chances. They are still getting a good number of shots on net and are applying pressure on the opposing goalie. In their game against the Montreal Canadiens, they fired off 46 shots, but they were unable to get the puck in the back of the net. It was the second-most shots the Blues had taken in a shutout. The most came back in 1986 when they had 48 shots on net in a 1-0 loss to the Flyers.
That's the 2nd most shots on goal in a shut-out in #stlblues franchise history. The most was in 1986 with 48 shots on goal.

This game was a microcosm of the whole season. As a team, the Blues are averaging 28.1 shots per game, which is the 13th most in the NHL. The metrics for the offense also show that this team should be scoring at a much higher rate. According to Natural Stat Trick, the Blues have a 50.60 CF%, a 51.59 SCF%, and a 50.43 xGF% in all situations. It shows that the chances are there; they just need to finish. But what can the Blues do to start putting the puck in the back of the net?
How can the Blues turn these chances into goals?
There are a few things the Blues could do in order to change their scoring luck. The easiest would be switching up the lines. Sometimes, different line combinations and switching up the chemistry is enough to spark the offense and get their fortunes to change. Whether you add a scorer to a line of playmakers. Or put a playmaker alongside a couple of shoot-first players, it could change the Blues' luck and get them to start scoring.
One way they could do this is by bumping someone like Pavel Buchnevich. He has generated a ton of offensive chances this season, with a 55.81 CF%, 55.08 SCF%, and 55.05 xG%. He's one of the most effective offensive players this season. Giving him more minutes will create more offensive chances and more opportunities for the puck to go into the back of the net. It may seem like a simple change, but that is all this team really needs right now.
While the lack of scoring is concerning it does not appear to be something that will be a long term problem. Whether they make a few tweaks or luck start breaking their way eventually they will start scoring and playing up to potential.
