The St. Louis Blues have won back-to-back games against the Calgary Flames and have now pulled just one point away from being the last wildcard team in the Western Conference. They won those games, especially on Thursday night with a score of 4-1, because of their captain, Brayden Schenn.
Many have either liked or disliked his patch this season, as he has been a bit flaky at times. But, when it mattered most, in the biggest game of the year to date, Schenn delivered a masterpiece.
Going for fourth straight 20+ goal season
Crowning his two-goal performance on Thursday night, Schenn is on his way to a fourth season of scoring 20+ goals. He now has 10 goals on the year, and at the mid-way point, he has a great chance of hitting that milestone.
Schenn has been great over the past four games, with two goals and three assists for five points. But, it has also been much more than that, as he has been 35-23 from the faceoff dot, and laid the body 12 times. All over the ice, Schenn has been there making a difference.
This achievement of hitting 20+ goals over four straight years is a big accomplishment. He has yet to hit a 30+ goal season, but with a little under half a season to go, you never know.
When it mattered most
The silver lining here is that in a "playoff game", the Blues stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam. Responsible for two of those runs, was Schenn, and he was undoubtedly the most valuable player of the game.
That bodes well for the rest of the season, as the Blues are desperately trying to get a third straight win. Schenn will be one of the many core players who will have to answer the call every single night to deliver performances reminiscent of Thursday night's win against Calgary.
