Despite low expectations, there is some optimism around the Blues heading into the season. They are bringing back impact pieces like Jimmy Snuggerud, Robert Thomas, and Joel Hofer. Two of the main drivers of the Blues' 17-5-3 record after the Olympic break. They also brought in impact players like Connor McMichael and Mason McTavish. There is a path for them to define expectations and have a good season. The first three games of the season will be a big test for this group and could set the tone for the season.

The Blues will be tested early

The Blues might have the hardest stretch of games to start the season. They play opening night on the road against the Dallas Stars. Then they will travel up to Colorado to take on the Avalanche. Not only are these two playoff contenders, but they also have a very realistic chance to win the Stanley Cup. Finally, they will travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Sure, they are not a heavyweight like the other two, but they are a rival and have high-end talent to upset anyone.

There is no tune-up period for this team. In the span of four days, they will play two Stanley Cup contenders and arguably their biggest rival. That is going to be a huge test for this group. Very early on, we will see how this team is able to handle adversity and play teams with more talent than them. Sure, a three-game sample at the start of the season is not always indicative of how the team plays. But it could send the season down two different paths depending on how they play.

If the Blues are able to play well and win a couple of these games, it will be a huge confidence boost to this group. It will be a sign that, yes, they can hang with the best of the best and will not let a tough travel schedule get to them. It will also be a statement to the rest of the league. Despite everyone criticizing the Blues roster, they went into these hostile environments and beat teams that should make a run. It will cause a lot more people to look at what they are doing.

On the other hand, if the Blues come out of the gate and lose all three games, it will be very deflating. It will feel like a missed opportunity. A chance to show the league this roster is better and can contend with the best of the best. This can cause the team's morale to plummet. Especially with a young group like this, failing your first test can cause some doubts to form. It can lead to more bad play and cause the Blues to be buried early.

This is arguably the most important start of the season the Blues have had. We will learn a lot about what this team can do before they even play a home game.
