The Blues have been on the wrong side of history when it comes to facing off against rookies

On Valentine's Day in 1977, the St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers faced off in what would be a historic game. A record was set that day, and it still stands nearly 50 years later.

In a 6-4 loss, the Blues became the first team to ever allow an opposing rookie, in their NHL debut, to amass a five-point game. That rookie was Al Hill, who would only have one more point outside of that game in his rookie season of 1976-77. He finished that historic game with two goals and three assists against both the tandem of Blues goaltenders, Eddie Johnston and Yves Belanger.

This is an embarrassing place to be in the NHL record books, but someone has to be in this spot. Amazingly, with the new bunch of expansion teams like Vegas and Seattle, it's interesting that they wouldn't have had their chance to rival the Blues in this spot.

There was one other debut against the Blues that was not great. This one was not a "only player ever" milestone, but it was pretty close nonetheless.

Stanislav Chistov, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim

Back in 2002, Stanislav Chistov became one of five players to ever have a four-point debut. Further adding to the Blues' place on the wrong side of the history books. This one came in 2002, on October 10, as the 19-year-old forward scored a goal and added three assists for four points.

It was the first game of the 2002-03 season, and the Blues would end up losing 4-3. Not the best way to start a season, but there is an argument that getting throttled by Minnesota, 5-0, on opening night of the 2025-26 season is a lot worse.

Has a Blues rookie done it to another team?

Jorgen Pettersson, who holds the Blues rookie record for most goals and points in a single season, also holds the most points in a single game as a rookie. On January 6, 1981, against the Quebec Nordiques, he had two goals and three assists for five points in a 6-3 victory.

He finished that 1980-81 season with 37 goals and 36 assists for 73 points. That is still a Blues record for a single-season rookie total, but with this upcoming prospect pipeline, there are a couple of contenders that can try to match it. Jimmy Snuggerud was pretty close last season with his 21 goals and 30 assists for 51 points.
