The 2026 NHL Draft is the most important couple of days for the St. Louis Blues this offseason. With them having three first-round picks, they can add several intriguing prospects to add to their young core. Sure, they will not make much of an impact in the short-term. But for the team's long-term success, hitting on these picks is vital. Whether it's the 11th, 15th, or the 29th pick, the Blues should be able to make their prospect pool one of the best in hockey.

One of the most fascinating potential picks is who Joe Yerdon of Bleacher Report has the Blues taking with the 15th overall pick. In his latest mock draft, he has the Blues selecting forward Oliver Suvanto. The 17-year-old has spent the last few years rising the rankings of the Finnish hockey world, and has set himself up to be one of the better center prospects in this year's draft. But what makes Suvanto a good fit for the Blues?

Why the Blues should look to draft Oliver Suvanto

This past season was the most important in Suvanto's career. After a strong 2024-25 that saw him put up a career high 42 points for Tappara U18, he earned a promotion to the Liiga club. In 48 games with Tappara, he racked up two goals and nine assists for 11 points. He also appeared in one of Tappara's playoff games, although he failed to register a point. He also appeared in four different international tournaments for Team Finland, logging 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 36 games.

Suvanto has been praised for his defensive responsibility, especially at such a young age. He uses his large 6'3", 209-pound frame to his advantage, helping him apply pressure and play confidently. He is someone who wants to win every shift he's on, and a big way to do that is to shut down the opponents' offense. While his offensive ability is not his strength, he does have a few encouraging signs. He's very good at passing the puck and setting up his teammates.

He projects as a strong middle-six center who can top out as a second-line center. But the best role for him to take is to be the third-line center on a shutdown line. Someone who leads the line whose main goal is to suffocate opponents' offense and play crucial minutes late in games. It is a role that has become very important in the modern NHL. Having Suvanto take on that role in the future is a perfect way to transition him into the NHL.

Now, while Suvanto is very intriguing, it will be a while before we see him in St. Louis. He is one of the youngest players in this draft class, as he will not turn 18 until September 3rd. He will likely play a couple more seasons in Liiga, allowing him to develop in a professional hockey league. Then, by 2028-29, he will likely enter camp on the roster bubble, and they will determine whether he can break camp with the team during training camp. But he should find his way to St. Louis at some point that season.

Although he's not the one of the flashy offensive forward, Suvanto is a perfect fit for the Blues. He is someone who can do the dirty work for this team and keep them responsible defensively.
