The Blues may have made the fewest moves this offseason, but they made it count

The St. Louis Blues had the least amount of signings and trades since the start of this summer. That is hard to believe when you think about what position they are in going into the 2026-27 season. 

The General Manager transition was smooth and seamless, thus ensuring the future is in good hands. Couple that with the new additions made and the potential that comes with it; these lowly amount of moves already seem like they are going to be the most impactful out of all 32 NHL teams. 

Big moves

The trade of Jordan Kyrou to get draft capital and Connor McMichael, and the trade to acquire Mason McTavish from Anaheim, are the two big highlights this summer. Getting that top-six help, whilst having smaller AAV contracts compared to the trend happening amongst the rest of the NHL, was crucial. Not to mention that both of those new players are right inside the age group of the new Blues core group. 

Ross Johnston is going to be another big-time move, as his grit and tenacity will spark a lot of offense from a gigantic fourth line. Wrapping up the small set of mighty moves was bringing in much-needed depth on the blue line with Brandon Carlo. For two third-round selections, his play style of being a stay-at-home defenseman will help unofficial starter Joel Hofer tremendously. 

No need to swing for fences this offseason

One of the reasons why the Blues made the least amount of moves this offseason was because of the position that they are in. They are not a playoff team, and they are also not an automatic lottery team. This limbo position and movement into a younger and more inexperienced roster paints the picture that they are still in a retool. 

This offseason’s free agent market was slim, and anything big would have sent the Blues back a bit. There was no way to move forward by grabbing an aging Patrick Kane or getting another goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky. It made no sense for this franchise to be in on those deals. 

To say the Blues had an inactive offseason is not true whatsoever. Not many deals were made, but as of now, they all seemed like the right ones.
