The St. Louis Blues have a busy offseason ahead of them, as their 2025-26 campaign did not go as planned. It is not exactly back to the drawing board, but more of a brace for the youth movement.
There is a chance that this franchise could be considerable buyers in free agency and the Draft, with some links to Brady Tkachuk being the most-likely. But, what if there was a bigger fish out there that could be possible to grab.
With the early exit of the Edmonton Oilers, it is now time for the annual debate as to whether Connor McDavid will be choosing to leave the only team he has ever known. Could the Blues be a likely landing spot for him?
Not impossible, but it would likely decimate this team
For the best player in Hockey, it is going to take an army to grab him. Whether it be General Manager Doug Armstrong, or the new guy in waiting, Alexander Steen, it will take a lot to bring McDavid away from the Oilers.
It would likely be all three of the first-round picks, Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, if not more of the prospect pool that includes Jimmy Snuggerud, Dalibor Dvorsky or Otto Stenberg. Grabbing McDavid would be a godsend, as he can completely change a game with one single skate up the ice, but it would decimate this team.
There is also the case as to whether McDavid would actually leave Edmonton. He took a very team-friendly deal last summer, at two-years, $12.5 million AAV. With the NHL increasing their salary cap with each season, there is more chances for the Oilers front office to go out and grab supporting players for No. 97.
The Blues and Oilers have an extensive history of swapping players. Most recently, the offer-sheets of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway worked out really well for the Blues. Each of those two players are going to be key members of their new core group, as they both signed extensions to be here past 2030.
The McDavid sweepstakes are going to be a surreal experience this summer. All eyes are going to be on him deciding whether or not he wants to stay the rest of his two-year contract. If not, the Blues could be a nice landing place for him, but there may not be much left after getting him.
