To affect change, you need to change,”, Montgomery reveals a much harder training camp for 2026-27

The St. Louis Blues cleaned out their lockers and are now in full offseason mode. Now, all eyes are on the 2026-27 season being a much better result.

In order to get there, head coach Jim Montgomery spoke on how and when that winning culture can be established. He backed it up with a knockout quote that should be the mantra for next season.

“To affect change, you need to change,”

After losing in the final seconds of game seven of the 2024-25 first round series against Winnipeg, the Blues held their heads high going into the offseason. Maybe they were a little too high, because their training camp was good but not nearly enough to get them ready for the season.

That was felt in the first month of the regular season, surrendering 51 goals in the first 12 games. The goal differential at that point was an abysmal -17. To say that the 2025-26 season was underwhelming is an accurate statement.

Whatever air they were breathing from the year prior was swiftly knocked out of them.

Montgomery issued his warning

Montgomery issued his statement on this upcoming training camp at the end of the summer. He wants his players to be warned that this will be a rough camp, a tough one, and that they better show up in shape.

With how disappointing this season was, and how invested these Blues players are to evolving into a contender, that sentiment might stick this time around. Two seasons in a row of poor first-halves and then exponentially better performances in second halves has to be a major issue to fix in 2026-27.

The Blues are going to have a busy summer, and whoever is left standing, or will be making their arrival, will have to change. Expect the 2026-27 Blues to be a much grittier and hungrier team, and Montgomery is gonna force it out of them.
