Unbelievably, the Blues best player this season has been a defenseman

The 2025-26 season for the St. Louis Blues has been nothing but a major letdown through the first 57 games. It has been underwhelming, conflicted, and overall disappointing for just about everyone that wears the Blue Note.

Looking back on the season, prior to this incredible Olympic showcase for both sides of the hockey spectrum, there have not been too many Blues to highlight. The forward group as a whole has not been able to put goals in the back of the net, and the defense has not done much to stop the opposition from doing that to them. For the goaltending, it has been lackluster at times, but also misinformed because of the lack of offense and defense in front of them.

If you were to name an MVP for the first 57 games of the season, there is really only one name that jumps off the page. Funny enough, that player is a defenseman, further adding to the confusion that is the 2025-26 campaign.

Philip Broberg has been fantastic

Philip Broberg should be named as this team's MVP, and it isn't even close. There are so many examples of how he has done his part on the defensive end, as well as his ability to turn the game around with some speedy rushes through the neutral zone. He is the closest thing the Blues have to an offensive defenseman, much like the rest of the NHL seems to have highlighted in their game plan.

No. 6 has been so good this season that with an uncertain future ahead of this franchise, General Manager Doug Armstrong went all-in on Broberg with a new extension. It was a pretty lucrative deal, at $8 million AAV for the next six seasons. A No-Trade Clause kicks in next season, which adds to the rest of the core of this franchise.

Broberg's numbers do not jump off the page, but with the eye test, he plays a solid game. That was evident in the Olympics as well as a part of a fantastic blueline for Team Sweden. It will be interesting to see just how much more he learned by playing with some of the world's best talent at his position.
