It is hard to say if the St. Louis Blues’ season was a complete failure or not. Obviously, a missed playoff appearance after making it the year before should warrant that label, but what if this was a necessary loss?
Right now, the outcome of the 2025-26 season is the 11th selection of the upcoming draft, and also the 15th pick from Detroit in the trade for Justin Faulk. Sounds pretty close to a win already.
Did the Blues take a step forward last season?
What do the fans think?
Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic opened up some questions to the fans, and they had some interesting perspectives. When asked about whether the past season was a step forward, they felt that it was a necessary step in the right direction of the retool.
It makes sense, as mentioned above, the Blues have a great chance to add some definitive pieces via the draft this season. Or, they can package those picks for an established player. The ball is really in the Blues' hand, and they have a lot of options right now to work with.
Answering the question
There is a pretty good idea where this team is going now, as opposed to before the season began. The surprise playoff appearance, and near knockout of the Presidents' Trophy winners in Winnipeg, gave this team a sense of false identity. There was a false hope that they were annual contenders for the Stanley Cup, and that is simply untrue.
Now, this team does stink, but it is a mild odor. It can easily be cleaned up, with just a few more tweaks and some time.
The fans got it 100% right on this one. They are in a better position now than they were prior to the 2025-26 season, and that will become apparent when the 2026-27 season begins.
