The National Hockey League is holding its annual Board of Governors meeting this week. A representative from all 32 teams will be in attendance and there are a plethora of topics on the table for discussion. For the Blues, owner Thomas Stillman will be representing the franchise.
None more bigger, than the proposal of increasing the Salary Cap for each team from $88 million to $92.5 million. This is a huge topic of conversation, and something that could change the game forever.
There. is an overwhelming vibe around the league that this deal to increase the salary cap will go through. It is a great move for the league and a necessary one, as teams are starting to offer players higher and higher deals, and their bottom-tier lines are starting to get very scarce. Just this past week, the New York Rangers signed goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a record-breaking deal for goaltenders.
For the Blues, the salary increase would help out tremendously. This season, they are only under the cap by around $400,000. You cannot afford to sign anyone with that. Having another $4.5 million in their back pocket leaves limitless possibilities to round out the roster. With much of their core locked up for a couple of years ahead, bringing in a new face in free agency will be possible with the new deal.
Of course, there will be something else likely discussed in the meetings, which is the Collective Bargaining Agreement that is set to expire in 2026. Time is ticking on that deal, and with the popularity of hockey on the rise in recent seasons, the thought of another lock-out simply cannot happen.
If anything comes of these meetings, if it is Blues related or not, we will update it here.
Do you think the salary cap increase is a good or bad thing for the league?
