In the final minutes of the St. Louis Blues horrific loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, 7-3, there was a bit of a comedic moment from backup goaltender Joel Hofer. After goaltender Jordan Binnington was already lit up for seven goals, it looked as though head coach Jim Montgomery wanted a change in net for the last couple of minutes.

But, Hofer did not go out there, and Binnington finished the game. This was a look at what happened behind the bench.

Binnington's roller coaster continues

Binnington earned this start after his shutout performance against the Montreal Canadiens over the weekend. It seemed like he was finally going to be able to put his foot on the gas pedal and aim toward being a consistent goaltender going into the Olympic Games in February.

But that was not the case against Chicago on National Television. In the second half of Wednesday Night Hockey on TNT, with their incredible panel of great NHL Alumni like Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky, the Blues showed how they have looked all season. It was another second-period collapse, and now, that shutout win from a few days ago looked like it was last season's work.

Heading into this Olympic break, the Blues have four representatives going to Italy, and Binnington might be the most controversial of them all. Since the announcement was made, he has allowed two instances of six goals to Colorado and then this recent touchdown and extra point to Chicago. He continues to scare those who support Team Canada, and the decision for the starting goaltender for the best-on-best tournament is still unclear.

Was there a point in the goalie change?

At that point in the game, when that clip was made, it was a 7-3 game. With just under six minutes left in the game, there was a chance for a comeback, but it was still a bit too far away. Four goals in six minutes is a heavy feat, and even heavier when you realize that the Blues have the least amount of goals scored for the year in the NHL.

There was really no point in a goalie change, but seeing Hofer peak around the corner of the dressing room hallway was a bit of comedic relief this fanbase needed. It was almost like he was hiding to protect himself from allowing another goal to his statline on the season. Either that, or he was awaiting the signal from head coach Jim Montgomery to head on out.

Either way, this was a bad loss for the Blues, and one that sets them back once again. Can this team ever find consistency?
