The St. Louis Blues have had Craig Berube as the interim head coach since Mike Yeo was fired on November 20 and now, there might be a coach on the open market worth hiring.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Monday that they had fired head coach Dave Hakstol after a poor start to the season and he may be a fit for the St. Louis Blues are their next head coach.

Yeo was fired after a 7-9-3 start to the season, and at the time of his dismissal, the Blues had been shut out in three of four games. Cleary something needed to change, but it looks like it was not the head coach that was the problem after all.

Berube has not fared much better as the Blues bench boss. With a record of 5-6-1 since he took over, the Blues have still not won more than two games in a row this season.

More from Rumors

Enter Dave Hakstol. Hakstol’s career with the Flyers was mediocre. He did have some regular season success with the Flyers but was unable to advance past the first round in the playoffs.

His record with the Flyers finished at 134-101-42 and had a postseason mark of 4-8.

One could argue that Hakstol did not have a great roster to work with or that the Flyers are in one of the best divisions in the NHL.

The Metropolitan Division has produced the last three Stanley Cup champions, and it has left teams like Philadelphia with little success in the playoffs.

Before his firing this season, Hakstol and the Flyers had a record of 12-15-4, and they currently sit dead last in the Metropolitan with 28 points. Granted, the roster of the Flyers, like the Blues, is in turmoil and someone had to take the fall for the poor play.

I would imagine that Joel Quenneville would be the top candidate to replace Berube and Yeo, but there has been little chatter of Quenneville’s return to the NHL. Dave Issac of the courier post said that the Flyers have at least checked in with Quenneville.

Hakstol took over for Berube in 2015 and brought the Flyers to the playoffs. Brayden Schenn also has experience playing under Hakstol, and a new coach could reignite his career. That is if Schenn is not traded soon.

I don’t think Hakstol is a fit with the Blues in the immediate future. If Quenneville is still unsigned by the season’s end, meet with him and look at your options. Hakstol does, however, have NHL experience, and if the Blues ended up hiring him, I would be intrigued to see what he can do with the team.
