The last two seasons of St. Louis Blues hockey have showcased irregular play until the final stretch of the season. The first time it worked was courtesy of a franchise-record-setting 12-game win streak to sneak into the playoffs in 2024-25.Â
This most recent attempt last season was just a little too late.Â
Looking at how the 2026-27 schedule is laid out, there may be an opportunity for the Blues to jump ahead of the final two months of the season to gain momentum. But when?
The ideal place would be the start
The 2025-26 season got off to a rough start with a 5-0 dismantling at the hands of the Minnesota Wild on opening night at the Enterprise Center. Not the way you want it to go after a surprise playoff appearance and a near knock-out of the Presidents' Trophy winners.
For 2026-27, the ideal place to gain momentum would be at the start of the 84-game gauntlet. The Blues have their hands full with that, since the first three games of the season are against Central Division opponents. They had a lot of trouble against their own division last season, and that could very well be the case for this one as well.
If the start of the season is gonna get off on the wrong foot again, and the need for a late surge at the end for a third time doesn't make sense, then when do the Blues have to have a nice streak of wins to establish some momentum?
Potentially around the holidaysÂ
The Blues are going to have their longest homestand of the season right after Thanksgiving. From November 27 through December 8, they host Dallas and Washington in a back-to-back, then Pittsburgh, Chicago, Nashville, and Colorado. That is a nice blend of Central and Metropolitan Division talent that could catapult them into contention around the quarter-mark of the season.
This team got another gift with another home game after the Christmas break, hosting the New York Rangers on December 27. These players are going to enjoy this time with family, and that could pay off if they get hot in front of the Blues faithful at home.
So, it would technically be two months, from the end of November through the end of the calendar year. That is where this Blues team can make up some solid ground on their Division rivals.
