The St. Louis Blues have now dropped seven straight games and are threatening a franchise record. The only problem is that this record is not one that you want to achieve.
After winning the most games in a row for the entire history of this franchise with 12 wins down the stretch last season, now this team is singing a different tune. If the Blues cannot defeat the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night, they will tie the 2022-23 team for most losses in a row with eight.
Is it time to start worrying?
Better play over the last two games
Of course, this team continues to lose, and the questions keep surmounting on what can be done to fix this mess. But things are starting to slowly take shape. Specifically, over the last two games against Vancouver and Columbus.
The offense has been getting the puck on net and in bunches. Both games saw the Blues pepper the opposing goaltenders with 39 shots apiece, despite the losses.
Additionally, the goaltending woes are being left in the past. Both Jordan Binnington and Joel Hofer, with a focus on Hofer, have looked better in both contests. The Oilers are always a dangerous club, as they currently have 41 goals on the year as a team.
Loss to Edmonton ties it and loss to Capitals sets it
The main worry here with this potential record-breaking losing streak is that these next two games are against very good teams. The Oilers have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way, and then it is onto the Washington Capitals, with the greatest goal scorer of all-time in Alex Ovechkin and a red-hot Tom Wilson.
Luckily, the Capitals, which would set the record with a Blues loss at nine games, are currently riding a four-game losing streak themselves. The Blues are also there next game on the schedule, as they have a four-day break from losing to Buffalo in a shootout on Saturday.
If you were to put a number, 1-10, on how much worry there is on this potential franchise record, it should be at about a 7 right now. The Blues are still without Robert Thomas and Jake Neighbours, and that has hindered their goal production, despite the uptick in shots on goal. Not to mention that the goaltending has a very good chance of failing again with the lackluster play from the defensive unit.
