Blues have little hope of trading Jordan Kyrou this summer

The St. Louis Blues won't have much of a chance of trading Jordan Kyrou, as one notable Blues insider noted, unless something changes.

The St. Louis Blues have one storyline they won’t be able to get away from until they actually do something about it. However, trading Jordan Kyrou figures to be much easier said than done.

Chatter involving the 28-year-old is nothing new. In fact, it’s been an ongoing discussion for the last year or so. But if one notable Blues guru is right, incoming GM Alex Steen will have little hope of moving Kyrou.

In a May 12 piece in The Athletic, Jeremy Rutherford underscored how difficult it would be for the Blues to move Kyrou, given the purported asking price.

As Rutherford noted, Steen will have a hard time getting what he wants for Kyrou.

“I believe that the Blues will try to move Kyrou, but it’s hard to see teams giving them an established player, a prospect and a draft pick, which is what they might want.”

Yikes.

That’s a steep ask, particularly for a player who had a down year in 2025-26. Kyrou was coming off three straight 30-goal seasons, but sank to 18 in 72 games this year. Perhaps that’s just an outlier, but it’s enough to scare teams away from making a significant push for Kyrou.

Beyond the actual acquisition cost, there’s also the matter of the five years remaining on Kyrou’s contract at $8.125 million per season. If Kyrou begins trending in the wrong direction, that cap hit could become prohibitive for just about every team in the NHL.

Blues would have to lower asking price to move Kyrou

If the Blues are serious about moving Kyrou and are unwilling to retain any salary, the only choice would be to lower their asking price.

As such, that situation could mean taking a mid-round pick and a lower-tier prospect. It might also mean settling for something like a second-round pick and a prospect someone has given up on.

However, the best course of action would be to just hold onto Kyrou at this point. The best thing that could happen for both the player and the organization is to have him bounce back. A strong start to next season could easily spur the conversation, potentially setting the Blues up for a much better return.

Unless Kyrou is dealing with a major injury, there’s no reason to think he can’t bounce back in 2026-27. That’s why it’s just better for all sides to take a step back, regroup, and come back strong next season.

Perhaps this conversation would look radically different next November or December, especially if Kyrou is on pace for another 30-goal-plus season.
