The St. Louis Blues are afraid of the number 3. They have to be.
Over the past three seasons, this franchise has been able to comfortably get to two-game win streaks quite often. But then, something happens in between the second and third game that turns this team into a shell of itself. It’s like the “Monstars from Space Jam” come down to St. Louis and steal the Blues top players skill and ability to play.
They cannot get that third win as easily as getting the first two.
Which is really funny to say about this team, because inside of the past three years that this growing trend has occurred, the 2024-25 Blues set a record for a 12-game win streak that helped catapult them into the playoffs that year. When they get past three, there is no stopping this group. But it is just so hard for them to get to that magic number.
Not enough commitment
The Blues are 0-3 this season when going for a third consecutive win.

In 2025-26, they were 3-7-2.
Monty: "It takes real commitment playing to an identity and something you believe in. I think we're getting close, but I feel in the last 2 years that hasn't been there enough."
There is nothing more frustrating than that. You get the momentum of two straight, hard-fought wins, and then you walk into Madison Square Garden against a floundering Rangers team and lose.
The Blues have been solid this season, despite the injuries and constant changing of personnel between Springfield call-ups and waiver wire claims. This unit has endured it all and played solid hockey.
Getting to three two-game win streaks, with a record of 7-7-1, should tell you how much this lack of getting a third win hurts.
Momentum killer
All around the NHL, you see teams easily blow past three straight wins. The longest win streak so far this season belongs to Carolina, which started the season at 10-0-0.
The Hurricanes are still the top dog in the Metropolitan Division, and likely will be all year long. All thanks to a momentum-building win streak.
But the Blues cannot get to that third one. It has become a tradition at this point to mark them down as a loss after two wins in a row, and that stigma has to change. It is on the players, but it is mostly on head coach Jim Montgomery and captain Robert Thomas to lead the charge. They have to spark the locker room and get back that stolen power from “The Monstars”.
