The 2025 NHL Draft came and went and the St. Louis Blues had a successful couple of days. But, it was a little too quiet on the business end, after coming in so hot with a slew of trade rumors. With two days to go until Free Agency begins, was that the calm before the storm?

Is something brewing?

There are two big needs for the Blues that can be answered in free agency. This team needs to iron out the defensive end and find a Center to complement the second line behind Robert Thomas. That has to be done on July 1st.

Of those two position groups, the bigger need is on the defensive end. With Torey Krug done for seemingly his career, Ryan Suter contemplating retirement and the potential for Nick Leddy to be used as trade bait, the Blues need d-men. There are Tyler Tucker and Matt Kessel who could graduate to big-time minutes, but the focus needs to be on finding one more top-4 defenseman in free agency.

Aaron Ekblad, barring Florida's relentless effort to try and three-peat, is a perfect candidate for the Blues. He is big, physical, and with back-to-back Stanley Cups, he brings that leadership to the table.

Does Kyrou stay or does he go?

Could General Manager Doug Armstrong be building up to something big? He spoke to the media and let his intentions be known, and to get one of his best players is a high price tag.

Jordan Kyrou could be on the move before his no-trade clause kicks in on July 1, and Armstrong is going to ask for an arm and a leg to get him. A 1-for-1 trade seems like the asking price, and this has all the makings of being a blockbuster trade. Of course, the Blues don't exactly lose in this situation, as Kyrou could remain with the Blues for the duration of his contract and continue to build into the superstar that he is beginning to show he can be.
