Brayden Schenn’s future with the Blues might not be as safe as fans think

After benching one of their top goal scorers and most highly paid players, Jordan Kyrou, the St. Louis Blues are not done making headlines. Following their shutout of the Buffalo Sabres, 3-0, rumors started circulating that this franchise might be taking calls on key players.

According to Frank Seravalli, General Manager Doug Armstrong might be opening the floodgates and making some major changes. One of those changes involves the Blues captain, Brayden Schenn, who no longer has a Full No-Trade Clause.

When head coach Jim Montgomery made the decision to bench Kyrou, it proved that no one is safe on this roster. But are the Blues making the right choice in trying to move pieces around this early in the season?

Why Schenn?

Schenn is now 34 years old, and his contract expires at the end of the 2027-28 season. He is still a versatile center, moving up and down the lineup and even off of his usual position to the wing.

This season, as it has been the case with most of the Blues' core group, Schenn has not been as offensively effective. In 15 games, he has two goals and four assists, but the real problem here is his plus/minus of -13. He is also second on this team for most penalty minutes, with 16.

His leadership is his most important value, but that has also been rather shaky this year. When the Blues needed him to try and right this ship, he hasn’t been able to do it vocally or with his play on the ice.

Why make moves?

The Blues are swirling the drain of the Western Conference at 5-8-2 for 12 points. They are in last place in the Central Division, but a playoff spot is within reach at only 18 points (Winnipeg and Utah). Something has to change.

Whether it is benching or getting rid of some older talent to supplement the youth on the rise, Armstrong has to be thinking of trying to get this team back in the green. The Blues cannot afford to waste all of the momentum gained last season from their surprise playoff appearance, only to then be a lottery pick this season.

Nobody is safe on this team, and that should be motivation enough to stay in the win column.
