(Sutter, Federko, Hull + Pronger, MacInnis + Binnington)
The St. Louis Blues have had a bunch of great hockey players represent this franchise, and assembling a super team would be tough. Some areas would be easier to pick, as there are so many different combos to create.
Let's look at who is the best for each position group and assemble the best Blues lineup of all time. This is gonna be fun.
The forwards
This might be the easier understanding, as compared to the defensive duo being a toss-up between three names. The forward group consisting of Brett Hull, Brian Sutter, and Bernie Federko is the best possible group of players on both wings and down the middle.
Hull is the best goal scorer of all-time when it comes to the Blues franchise record books, and Sutter is closely behind him. There is an argument to be made about Brendan Shanahan being a replacement for Sutter, but there is more evidence of Sutter being the better Blue for longer.
Federko is an easy one, as he is the best player overall in franchise history. The points, games played, and now as an analyst covering this team, he is what we can all call, "Mr. Blue".
The defense
This is a much harder analytical feat, but in terms of cohesivness and chemistry, the best possible defenders to couple that incredible forward line is Al MacInnis and Chris Pronger. Adding to the skill up front, MacInnis's incredible shooting power and quarterback mentality with the puck, alongside a ferocious two-way defender in Pronger would be a lethal duo.
The puck would constantly be hawked by both of those defenders, and the turnaround speed back up the ice would be unfair. Both MacInnis and Pronger were amongst the league's best during their tenures with the Blues.
The goaltender
Now we have gotten to the easiest decision of them all, the goaltender. Nobody has won more, played more, and achieved more than Jordan Binnington, and that will stand for a long time. Right now, it seems like No. 50's historic run is starting to reach its conclusion, but there is no denying that he is the best goaltender in franchise history.
Creating the greatest Blues lineup is a tough ask, but it is the forward line of Sutter-Federko-Hull, followed by MacInnis-Pronger on the blueline, and Binnington stopping the puck. Imagine what kind of scoresheet that opening lineup would bring.
