There is a lot of excitement for the 2026 NHL draft. With the St. Louis Blues having three first round picks, it is a huge opportunity for the Blues to deepen their prospect pool. To add the next generation of prospects and give the fanbase hope that they can be a sustain winner. It is also the end of an era as it will be the last draft Doug Armstrong will run. After the draft he will turn the GM reigns over to Alex Steer.

With all of these storylines, plus the fact that this is one of the deepest draft classes in recent memory, it's shaping up to be the most important draft in Blues history. If the Blues can nail this draft and come away with multiple franchise pieces, it will change the entire direction of this team. It could usher in an era of Blues dominance that we have not seen in St. Louis before. But how can the Blues pull this off?

This Blues draft class could be one we talk about for years

As mentioned before, the Blues hold three first-round picks. They have the 11th, 15th, and 29th overall picks. Sure, they will miss out on the big prospects like Gavin McKenna and Ivar Stenberg. But there are plenty of quality prospects at this spot. Guys like Oliver Suvanto, Wyatt Cullen, Thomas Bleyl, Liam Ruck, etc., have the potential to become great NHL players. If developed properly, they can become staples of the Blues lineup.

Although anyone the Blues draft this year is unlikely to be the NHL over these next few seasons, they could be the guys that put them over the top. The goal of this Blues rebuild should be to have a competitive hockey team sometime around 2027. At that point, these prospects should be ready to make the jump to the NHL. They can come up and give the extra push they need to make the playoffs. Turning them from a bubble team to one of the best in the west.

It will also give the Blues more flexibility roster-wise. They can allocate cap space to other players, knowing that they will have young, cheap talent in a premier position on the team. Allowing them to bring in star talent and retain the core pieces. They can also be a replacement for aging veterans. They will be able to build a machine that replaces guys who are starting to regress with guys who are on the rise. Thus, creating sustainable success and extending their window.

It also adds to Doug Armstrong's legacy. He is already a franchise legend, having built the 2017-18 roster that won the franchise's first Stanley Cup. That alone would have put him among the legendary names in Blues history. But if he is able to land a few pieces that become contributors on the next successful Blues team, he is, without question, the best executive in franchise history. He would have a hand in multiple eras of success.

While it may not seem like it, this could be the most important draft in Blues history. This draft could usher in an era of success that will last for years.
