The St. Louis Blues are entering the 2026-27 season without a captain for the first time since the 1996-97 season. It was a needed and evident change moving on from Brayden Schenn, and the search is now on for his successor.
There are a couple of names to argue for and debate, and there is also the debate as to whether or not it is necessary to make the call now. It might be best to wait, but with a lot of newer pieces joining the team and prospects seemingly about to break down the door to get into the NHL, the time might be better now to make the announcement.
Let’s talk about who ultimately deserves it, and the timing of it.
The timing might be right before this season
There are so many new parts all over this roster, and joint leadership among the alternates might lead to confusion. Operating under a new General Manager, Alexander Steen, is enough evidence to suggest that the regime is changing.
Thus, the need for a singular captain is required. An overwhelming voice in the locker room and a complete package on the ice are what could bring this team back into the competitive fold. Schenn was both of those things, but Father Time always wins, and this franchise now has to look younger.
Order of candidates from most likely to longshot
Robert Thomas and Jake Neighbours are neck and neck at this point as the top candidates. Each brings a specialty to their game, making it a coin flip.
Behind them is a good chunk of youth players who could get it. Philip Broberg is the top of the “B” group, alongside Jimmy Snuggerud. There is also a veteran player who has been a Blue for his entire career and much of it as an alternate captain, Colton Parayko. It is also important to note that Parayko is coming up on some key milestones for longevity, and his refusal to waive his no-trade clause further points to his loyalty to this fanbase.
Some long shots include Dalibor Dvorsky and Dylan Holloway. Dvorsky has to prove himself as a capable NHLer, and Holloway has to ensure that his play is sustainable from a health and performance standpoint.
The Blues are in a tough spot trying to name their next captain, or if they even should. As of now, the direction should be to make an announcement prior to the season on the 25th captain in franchise history.
