One St. Louis Blues issue that continues to put salt in the wound of this disappointing season

To put a label on the 2025-26 season, there are a couple of things you can say about it. It has been erratic, underwhelming, and certainly surprising. This season has been much of the same prior to that miraculous 12-game winning streak, which set a new franchise record and catapulted the Blues into the playoffs via the last wild card spot.

The only difference is, there is one really big problem that is like a black cloud over this team all season long. Recently, it has been so bad that it is like rubbing salt into an open wound.

Let's talk about what it could be.

Goal Scoring

The Blues have only scored 114 goals this season, which is tied for the National Hockey League's worst with Calgary. With one extra game than the Flames played, the Blues have the lowest goals-per-game average, at 2.48. To put that into even more perspective, over the last 21 games, the Blues have scored two goals or fewer in 15 of those games.

Justin Faulk, who is going to be a hot topic of discussion over the next few months leading up to the Trade Deadline in March, Jake Neighbours, and Robert Thomas are the leading goal-scorers with 11. To put that into an 82-game pace, that would be 19.6 goals by the end of the season. That means that nobody on this roster, which has some fairly elite players who are proficient in putting the puck in the net, will eclipse the 20-goal mark.

The worst part about the lack of goal scoring is that the defense and goaltending are also not doing this team any favors. More so on the goaltending, because this lack of production on the offensive end could be offset with a brick wall in net. Instead, the Blues are losing in the middle period of games, with little to no chance of a comeback because they can't score.

Head coach Jim Montgomery has tried just about every kind of line combination to get this team going, but it has been of no avail. This team has failed as a unit, and the fans high expectations for this season have been failed, miserably.
