The St. Louis Blues wrapped up their 2026-27 preseason with a 1-3-0 record. Scoring five goals in 12 periods of play, there wasn’t a whole bunch of excitement on that front.
The most exciting things that happened were witnessing of the new additions and highly anticipated prospects. We all got to see what the new core group looked like, as well as some future members.
Let’s go over this past week’s biggest happenings, as well as sprinkle in a bit of outside NHL news as well.
Prospect watch
Our first edition analyzing how all of the Blues prospects are doing around the world was released this week. Maddox Deganais and Carter Stevens led the way, with Vladimir Proskurin picking up his first win in the WHL. The kids seem to have taken everything that was taught to them in training camp and the preseason and are benefiting from it.
Blue line frenzy
Tyler Tucker and Logan Mailloux are both out with injuries for an unannounced time period. Then Calle Rosen was waived, while also picking up Justin Barron from Nashville after he was waived. Throw in a call-up to Adam Jiricek, and it is a full-blown defensive unit frenzy right now in St. Louis.
Replacements for Mailloux’s injury
Speaking of Mailloux, his place in the lineup is now an empty void. The Problem is that he was on the first line with Philip Broberg, and that is kind of important. Colton Parayko is the easy answer for who should be bumped up to that first pairing, but watch out for the aforementioned Jiricek. This call-up was a necessary one, but it should not surprise you to see head coach Jim Montgomery decide to toss the kid into the pool to see if he sinks or swims.
Special teams issues continue
The Blues were one of the bottom teams in terms of power-play effectiveness and were middle of the road on the penalty kill. With a staggering 0-18 in the preseason on the man advantage, this problem needs to be addressed immediately.
Boston, San Jose, and Anaheim name new captains
Around the NHL, there were a couple of different stories going on with only a few more days left until the regular season begins. There was a flurry of announcements that captains had been named for the 2026-27 season.
Starting in San Jose, it is no surprise that Macklin Celebrini is now the man in charge, as he is undoubtedly one of the best players in the NHL. Boston needed a new leader following Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, and David Pastrnak fits the bill as one of the last players from the mid- to late-2010s and early-2020s dynasty run. Anaheim joined in, with Mikael Granlund providing some leadership to that very young core.
