The St. Louis Blues have lost four games straight after their surprise shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Three of those losses were in regulation (including a shutout by the Edmonton Oilers), and one was a shootout loss to the LA Kings. There have been many issues with the Blues this season, from injuries to underperformance, but goaltending has been the team's biggest albatross.
The good news is that the Blues are no longer have the worst goaltending in the league--that would be the Ottawa Senators--and Joel Hofer has minus-1.6 Goals Saved Above expected (GSAx), per Money Puck. That's respectable backup territory and, given his age, Hofer's got room to grow from there.
The bad news is that Hofer's goaltending partner, Jordan Binnington, is putting up some of the worst underlying statistics in the league; his minus-21.3 GSAx is the worst of all goaltenders who've played an NHL game this season. Binnington's lost his last four starts, posting an .830 save percentage (SV%) and a 4.5 Goals Against Average (GAA) in that time.
The worse news? He's starting tonight against the Dallas Stars.
Outside of trying to help Binnington re-establish his game before he joins Team Canada in Milan in a couple weeks, there is no reason he should be getting regular starts. Hofer may be young, but he is clearly playing at a higher level than Binnington. That's a low bar to exceed but, if the goal is still to win games, it's time to hand the reins to Hofer and give him a more of a starter's role--he's shown he can play up to it.
