The St. Louis Blues are currently the 31st-ranked team in the entire National Hockey League. After a little over a month into the season, that is not exactly what you want to read when looking at the state of this team.
Where are they at now in this point of the season, and where could they possibly end up when everything is all said and done?
Season Review
With a record of 5-8-3 for 13 points, they reside at the bottom of the Central Division and nearly at the bottom of the NHL. Only the Calgary Flames, whom they face off against on Tuesday, have a worse record and standing.
Scoring goals has not been much of an issue, as they are 23rd in the NHL in goals scored with 44. The issue has been in the defense and goaltending, as both have been borderline horrific. With 62 goals allowed, they are 31st in the NHL in that category.
Neither Jordan Binnington nor Joel Hofer has been able to find much of a groove, causing some unforeseen issues at the beginning of the season.
Head coach Jim Montgomery has had his hands full, constantly juggling lines, moving players up and down the sheet, navigating injuries, and causing some interesting moves by benching a key part of this organization. Jordan Kyrou was benched, and then subsequently, had one of the better games of the season against Seattle.
Season's trajectory?
The trajectory for this season is still very much unknown. It is still very early on, but the possibilities are potentially good and bad. The Blues could turn it around and make their march back up the standings, amassing one of the most miraculous comebacks in Blues history. Or, this path to being a Gavin McKenna sweepstakes winner continues, and the Blues are at the bottom looking up.
This team will continue to compete and try to make this turnaround happen. Montgomery, as well as General Manager Doug Armstrong, will likely be making some kind of change, whether internally or externally, at some point in the year. The notion of Armstrong holding a fire sale is another thing to pay close attention to.
Will the Blues turn this around and try to make it back to the playoffs?
