The St. Louis Blues may have just had a generational draft, both for the present and the future. Using their first-round picks, they grabbed an NHL-ready player in Mason McTavish and a future 200-foot star in Tynan Lawrence.
Let us also not forget about a prospect that had many Blues fans dreaming of multiple 40-goal seasons. Maddox Dagenais has wowed everyone with his big size, coupled with speed and footwork that make him an elite scorer; there is nothing more exciting than this kid.
NHL ETA could be perfect timing
As part of the “next wave”, Dagenais will get his shot inside the next three years to make the Blues roster. At that point, the franchise could be in a position to win, further adding to the importance of his development. Next season, and the foreseeable future, will see the 6-foot-4 power forward in the QMJHL to continue his development.
By 2028-29, Dagenais might have a legitimate shot at making the opening night roster, and this upcoming training camp will really put things into perspective. That is another two years away, as the 2026-27 season is getting ready to unfold. That is ideally where the Blues will be in their championship window.
A potential 40-goal scorer
The Blues have not had a 40-goal scorer in a very long time. In fact, the last Blue to eclipse that number was Vladimir Tarasenko in 2015-16, which was over a decade ago. At the moment, there are a couple of players in the show right now that could beat Dagenais to the punch.
Jimmy Snuggerud and Dylan Holloway are both going to be the frontrunners to be the next to hit 40 goals in a single season. If he makes it on the opening-night roster out of training camp, Justin Carbonneau is another player to jot down as breaking that plateau before Dagenais reaches the NHL.
But when Dagenais makes it into the NHL and his development continues to be successful, he will be a 40-goal scorer. He has everything you want in a power forward, and that kind of player achetype have provent to be great goal-scorers.
In a few years, mark his name down as a solid player to build this team around.
