Going into this year's trade deadline, it feels like no one is safe on the Blues. Outside of a few young players, everyone has a price tag and could get moved before the 3:00 pm deadline. One of the players who was expected to have a lot of discussion around him is Jordan Kyrou. He has been one of the Blues' most effective forwards, racking up 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points in 51 games. He seems like the perfect player for a team looking to upgrade its top six.
Despite it getting closer and closer to the deadline, talk of a Kyrou trade remains quiet. Outside of a potential deal that would send him to the Islanders, there does not seem to be much interest surrounding him. No teams seem to be interested in acquiring the 27-year-old forward. This is one of the biggest surprises of the deadline so far. Given the current market, not trading Kyrou would be a mistake.
Jordan Kyrou should be the player the Blues are shopping the hardest
While he ranks in the top three among Blues players in point production, his metrics suggest he could be doing better. According to Hockey Reference, he has a 58.4 CF%, a 57.7 FF%, and a xGF of 32.8. Lines that Kyrou is on have been the most effective for the Blues this season. According to Moneypuck, lines with Kyrou have produced a 64.8 xGoals% and a 3.49 xGoals for 60 Minutes. It's clear that Kyrou has been able to evaluate whatever lines he is on.
It's not just that Kyrou has been effective this season, but his long-term lock should also bring some interest. He is currently in the third year of an eight-year deal, meaning he won't be a free agent until the end of the 2030-31 season. He's a player you can bring in, and he immediately becomes part of your core. He could be the missing piece a team needs in order to win, not just this season, but for years to come.
Now Kyrou is not going to come cheap. With everything that's been laid out, it will take a haul to acquire him. Which could be causing some of the hesitation in being interested in him. But with this being a seller's market, the Blues should be selling him. At the very least, Kyrou can land the Blues a first-round pick, a decent prospect, and a couple of later-round picks. But if a market comes together and the Blues have multiple suitors, we could be looking at a franchise-altering return.
While being cautious about giving up a huge haul is understandable, if you're a team with a young core, the benefits outweigh the risk. If you're a team like the Canadians, Capitals, or Mammoth that's good this year and has upside in the future, why not give up a big package for him? You already have the core of your team worked out, and adding Kyrou can be the finishing move that puts the team over the top.
If Kyrou is still on the Blues past the 3:00 pm deadline, it would be a big miss by the Blues. They could be passing on the opportunity to get a package that helps put the team back in contention sooner than expected.
