The Blues' newest draft pick, 17-year-old Tynan Lawrence, was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Lawrence put up an impressive 61 points in 27 games for the Fredericton AAA Blues before continuing his success across various levels, culminating with Boston University and Canada's U18 team in 2025-26.

Though Lawrence's numbers with both teams were somewhat underwhelming, having a year of college experience and playing for a national team at just 17 years old is quite impressive.

Strengths and weaknesses

Lawrence’s most impressive assets are his explosiveness as a skater as well as his consistency at both ends of the ice. Because of this, he has been praised for his transitions from zone to zone and projects as a two-way center with the ability to control an offense.

His performances in the NCAA and for national teams have led experts to praise his hockey IQ, though there are some concerns about his consistency at higher levels. This is reflected in his slow start at Boston University and lack of a flashy stat line.

How it projects to the NHL level

Lawrence is thought to be a high-floor prospect with a solid ceiling. He should compete with Otto Stenberg, Connor McMichael, and Dalibor Dvorsky for the second-line center spot in the Blues' future.

Lawrence is expected to return to college in 2026, and because of how young he is, Blues fans should expect to be patient with him. A 2028 or 2029 debut is possible for Lawrence, which could see him reach the NHL at just 19 or 20 years old. If he follows a similar path to Jimmy Snuggerud, the Blues can hope for a similar level of positive development.

Lawrence was a safe pick for Doug Armstrong to make in his final few weeks, but that doesn't mean he lacks a respectable ceiling. If his development continues on its current trajectory, the Blues may have found another important piece of their long-term core.
