The St. Louis Blues are just a few shorts weeks away from entering their 59th NHL season. As August continues to move along, and September is right around the corner, the idea of hockey is starting to enter back into the minds of diehard Blues fans.
When thinking of the 2026-27 season, there is a lot of uncertanity with it. Can they be better then last season? What if they are worse? Did they bring in the right pieces, and on and on and on,
Another important question to ask is who is under the most pressure for next season, and beyond? Whether it be about contracts, promotion to important roles, or trying to tak ethis team to the next level with personal performance, there are a few players that will be under the microscope over the next 84 games.
Let's talk about who.
Robert Thomas
Robert Thomas is not going to be traded or moved any time soon. Let's just get that out of the way.
But, there is a point of emphasis on his ability to continue to play as a high-level in 2026-27, on that fantastic first-line that was formed just a tad bit too late last season. Thomas has to remain the catalyst, like he has been for so many years before.
No. 18 is an exceptional player, and consistency has alway been his biggest attribute. But, with the idea of anything can happen, the Blues cannot afford to have him struggle.
Joel Hofer
Joel Hofer is expected to get the nod as the Blues next starting goaltender for the 2026-27 season, knocking Jordan Binnington down to the backup role. What mighty big shoes to fill there.
No. 30 has to come in to this upcoming season with no more hiccups or lackluster play in net, and have every start be of quality. Hofer cannot be the deciding factor in losing efforts, as his defensive unit in front of him should be slightly improved from a season ago.
Pavel Buchnevich
It has been talked about pretty extensively that Pavel Buchnevich is not living up to his contract's price tag. He has been falling downhill for a while now, and if it continues to slide, it could be the end of the road for No. 89.
Buchnevich has to have the thought that every game could be his last as a Blue for 2026-27, as it certiainly might be. There are enough players in the pipeline that would love to take his spot on the third-line, and given the chance, make a lasting impression to really push the 31-year-old winger out.
