Two days ago, Elliotte Friedman posted that the St. Louis Blues were likely to waive Alexandre Texier in order to terminate his contract. Yesterday, Texier went unclaimed on waivers, and was cleared to join the Blues' AHL affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds. Today, what Friedman originally reported has come to pass: Texier is now on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination, per Chris Johnston.

There are several reasons to terminate Texier's contract. First and foremost is that he doesn't really fit on this roster: Dalibor Dvorsky has turned into an everyday player, and offseason signings Pius Suter and Nick Bjugstad are simply better players than Texier; beyond center depth, Alexey Toropchenko and Nathan Walker are well-suited to their fourth-line roles, making Texier redundant. The second reason is Texier's $2.1-million AAV cap hit, which makes no sense for a player who's not getting NHL minutes.
In two seasons with the Blues, Texier played 39 games, most of which came last season as he's only dressed for eight games this season. In that time, he registered six goals, six assists, and 12 points while averaging 12:02 on the ice. Once his contract is terminated, he will be free to sign with any team he'd like, and it's quite possible he will--it's likely the only reason Texier went unclaimed on waivers was his contract's cap hit, which is too high for most contenders to comfortably fit. It's probable that the Blues tried to trade Texier but, again due to the dollars, were unable to find a willing partner, and waivers were a last-ditch effort to see if anyone would take the player for free.
Best of luck in your next endeavors, Alexandre!
