Checking in on the Blues' AHL and NHL prospects

It's a bit past the midpoint of the season, so we're taking a look at how the Blues' young players are faring.

The St. Louis Blues are not having a good season, and it continues getting worse with more poor injury luck. There isn't much to look forward to at the NHL level, but that doesn't mean there aren't any bright spots: they have a number of prospects on under-23 rankings boards, and even more that are worth keeping an eye on. We're starting with the prospects that've been part of the NHL roster (but can still be considered prospects) and those that're key members of the Blues' AHL affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds. Let's get into it.

The NHL Prospects

There are four prospects playing in the NHL this season worth checking in on: Dalibor Dvorsky, Otto Stenberg, Logan Mailloux, and Jimmy Snuggerud--all four are in their Calder seasons, though Stenberg could be eligible next season if he's returned to the AHL before he plays 25 games (there's no reason to do that, however).

After a promising finish to last season and an exciting playoffs, Snuggerud's 2025-26 season has been something of a disappointment. There are injuries to consider, but seven goals and 15 points in 35 games is not the sort of production we were hoping for. Though Snuggerud's not been good, he hasn't been an outright disaster like Mailloux has; in 32 games, Mailloux has one goal and one assist, and might win the Green Jacket this season with his minus-21 goal differential.

Dvorsky, meanwhile, is doing all right, considering the responsibilities thrust upon him due to injuries elsewhere on the Blues. He has seven goals and 10 points through 37 games, and is providing decent support down the middle. As for Stenberg, it's still a little early, but a goal and seven points in a mere 13 games is impressive (and if the Blues continue to tumble down the standings, they may have an opportunity to draft his brother, Ivar, this summer). Both, however, are underwater by advanced metrics, with Dvorsky rocking a 42.84 xGF% and Stenberg with an ugly 40.63 xGF%, per Natural Stat Trick.

The AHL Prospects

We're going to look at four prospects the Blues have cooking in the AHL, starting with Aleksanteri Kaskimaki, who had a five-game cup of coffee with the Blues earlier this season. The Finnish forward isn't known for his offense, but in 28 games with the Thunderbirds he has nine goals and 16 points. Another forward, Juraj Pkarcik, has five goals and 17 points through 34 games.

On the blue line, Theo Lindstein has struggled: he has two goals, six points, and an ugly minus-21 rating. In net, Vadim Zherenko has been just okay, with an 8-8-4 record and .899 SV%, but it's important to remember that goaltenders often take quite some time to develop, and Zherenko is still just 24 years old.

The Blues have a long road ahead to becoming perennial Stanley Cup contenders again, but they're not bereft of prospects already here in North America.
