Robby Fabbri claimed by the Minnesota Wild

Bringing Fabbri back midseason didn't work out as planned, but he may have better luck in Minnesota.

Yesterday, the St. Louis Blues waived forward Robby Fabbri, and today he was claimed by Central Division rivals the Minnesota Wild.

What could've been a storybook return to St. Louis was, unfortunately, not to be. Fabbri struggled all season with the Blues, and suited up for only 15 games. In that time, he scored one goal and registered three assists for four total points; he was averaging 12:36 of ice time each night, and finished with a minus-3 plus-minus rating.

Fabbri was the Blues' 21st-overall draft pick in 2014, and he debuted with the team in the 2015-16 season, scoring 18 goals and 37 points in 72 games as a rookie. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019, and the following season was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. In his career with the Blues, Fabbri totaled 179 games, 33 goals, 44 assists, and 77 points through parts of five seasons.

With the Wild, Fabbri should fit right in. Minnesota plays a physical brand of hard-nosed hockey and are gearing up for a playoff run that'll likely have them facing the red-hot Dallas Stars in the first round, presumably followed by a star-laden Colorado Avalanche team in the second round. Because he was claimed off waivers, Fabbri will join the Wild immediately; if they wanted to reassign him to the AHL, they'd have to waive him themselves and risk another team claiming him.

It may not have been the ending we'd all hoped for when GM Doug Armstrong signed Fabbri back in December amidst a run of injuries, but it was a something fun in an otherwise disastrous season. Best of luck in Minnesota!
