The St. Louis Blues had their worst loss of the season, and it might be considered one of the worst in recent memory. After going up 4-0 against the Detroit Red Wings, the script was flipped on the Blues, ending in a devastating 6-4 loss.
Even with that in mind, there are three big things to take away from this game, including a positive.
Let’s talk about it.
That is exactly how you should start a hockey game...
Going up 4-0 in the first 30 minutes of a game is exactly how you want to start. Yes, this monumental collapse was one for the record books (in a bad way), but you cannot deny that this team took that 7-4 loss to Utah to heart.
Jimmy Snuggerud and Jake Neighbours came out swinging with some great offensive chances and, most importantly, goals. Robert Thomas looked a lot like himself again after securing his 400th point of his career against Utah.
Montgomery's line changes worked exquisitely, and the Blues were really flying out there.
...But not the way you end one
But, once Detroit got in their first and second goal of the game in the final minutes of the second, the momentum shifted. That was as bad of a way to lose hockey game, and it is seemingly a perfect representation of how this Blues season has been going thus far.
Bad bounces, incredible redirections, and the home crowd of an original six team silenced the Blues four-goal lead in the second half of the game. Once it started, you could see it was not going to end well for St. Louis.
Too many things to blame
There are way too many things to blame for this abysmal loss. Offense was great, and then it tucked itself back into its shell for the Red Wings comeback. Defense, particularly the first pairing, could not stop onslaught. Jordan Binnington did what he could, but allowing five goals is not an easy thing to forgive.
The Blues can really only blame themselves for this loss, and this kind of loss cannot happen again.
