The St. Louis Blues have had an eventful start to the season, with twists and turns all over the place. They have a record of 1-1-0 for 2 points, winning the opening contest against Dallas before being dismantled by Colorado.
Inside and outside of the games, a lot has happened, and the hits just keep on coming for this team. Let’s go over it.
Hofer shines
Joel Hofer shined in the opening game against Dallas, shutting the door 4-0. It has become evident that he might be the most important player on this team right now.
In terms of looking at the three stars of the week, his nomination for first star was a given. Hofer has to stay solid as this team's starter if they want to have any hope of staying in contention. The Central Division has shown in the early going of this season that the top teams are still top-notch.
Binnington blunder
It was a different story for Jordan Binnington against the high-powered offense of the Colorado Avalanche. The defense was worse in front of him, but No. 50 couldn’t get out of his own way in this one. Turnovers by his own hand helped worsen the demise.
This blunder was one of the worst of his career, and might be a signal for the end. Binnington has been solid with time-off, but now it seems that the longer he is out, the worse he is inside the crease.
Toropchenko goes to IR
Alexey Toropchenko is heading to the Injured Reserve to join Logan Mailloux and Tyler Tucker. We will see what happens in six weeks from now, but the injury did not look good as he was skating off the ice.
There are a couple of replacements who could step up in No. 13's absence. This includes a prospect who made waves in the preseason.
Jiricek continues to get high praise
Adam Jiricek has had a busy start to this season, as injuries allowed him to be called up. His parents flew in just in time for his NHL debut, making it a special moment.
Blues head coach Jim Montgomery continues to praise the young defenseman, adding more confidence and expectation to his early career.
Prospects are flying high
Another week and another prospect report. The next wave of Blues players are cruising in their respective leagues and levels of competition.
Justin Carbonneau led the way with an impressive showing this week, and his NHL debut is coming soon. The aforementioned Jiricek has had quite the week himself.
